Sign petition to cut beer duty for at least 12 months

Written by Tom Blakemore

South Herts CAMRA is supporting a petition calling for the Government to cut beer duty for at least 12 months, so pubs can survive after the current crisis.

Pubs will need help to rebuild their business. Cutting beer duty for at least a year will ensure the price of a pint can be dropped which in turn will help get more people back to the pub.

The petition so far has over 26,000 signatures. At 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.

The Government responded to the petition by saying “An unprecedented package of support for individuals and businesses has been announced to mitigate the economic impacts of COVID-19, which will directly benefit the pubs sector.”

This initial announcement offered businesses some financial support but there is an ongoing concern in the hospitality industry, especially for pubs, that business as usual will not resume for some time to come, even after they’ve been told they can reopen. A cut to beer duty would be a small but welcome step in the right direction.
