The Mermaid, St Albans, wins the double

Written by Tom Blakemore

Congratulations to the Mermaid in St Albans for winning both local Pub of the Year awards for beer and cider!

The pub, situated on Hatfield Road in St Albans, consistently serves an exciting range six real ales and up to 15 real ciders and perries.

As excellent as the real ales, ciders and perries must be it takes more than serving a perfect pint to win these awards. Additional points are given for attributes such as service to the community, value for money, cleanliness and a warm welcome, which I’m sure you’ll agree is bang on every time!

John Bishop, one of the CAMRA selection panel and organiser of the St Albans Beer & Cider Festival says: “This is the first time that a pub in South Herts has won both Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year in the same year. It is a real testament to the hard work that landlord’s Mark and John have put into the pub since they took over three years ago”.

Mark Powell, Co-Landlord of the Mermaid with John Cusworth says: “We are absolutely thrilled to be named as South Herts. CAMRA Pub of the year, especially considering the strong competition in the area. It’s a great feeling to know that all our efforts have been recognised and the improvements we have made are appreciated. We would like to thank the local branch committee and all our regulars for all their support, encouragement and custom over the last 3 years. We look forward to ensuring The Mermaid keeps up its reputation of serving a great range and quality of real ales and ciders, in a friendly atmosphere, at the heart of the local community”.

Since I first moved to St Albans over 10 years ago the Mermaid has always been my go to pub for top notch beer and a fantastic, socialsble atmosphere. Regular live music, food events, darts matches, quizzes and beer/cider festivals means you’ll always find something different going on at the Mermaid!

The pub is holding a cider and perry festival over the late May bank holiday. To coincide with this the branch will be holding a special cider and cheese event on Saturday May 27th to celebrate CAMRA’s National Cider and Perry month campaign and the pub’s achievements. The award presentation to the Mermaid will take place at around 5pm that afternoon. More details will follow but put date in your diary now so you don’t miss out!
