Branch meeting – Tuesday 18th September 2018

Written by Les Middlewood

Guest Speaker: Jed Griffiths from Griffiths Environmental Planning – “Pub Protection and Planning Legislation”

Our September Branch Meeting is to be held on Tuesday 18th September, at the Old Barge, Hertford – situated on Folly Island in Hertford town centre – at 8pm – our first branch meeting ever to be held at this picturesque canalside pub.

Our speaker is Jed Griffiths, of Griffiths Environmental Planning. A specialist on environmental planning issues, Jed established his own consultancy following many years working for Hertfordshire and East Sussex County Councils. Jed is also well known in Hertford for his Friday night stints pulling pints behind the bar at the White Horse – now for over 45 years! He will be speaking to us about Pub Protection and Planning Legislation.

The Old Barge has been a Good Beer Guide regular for over a decade, featuring in Hertford’s annual Mild Night and Autumn Ale Trail, serving 4 real ales and a range of real ciders. Originally a two bar local it was transformed in the early 1980s into a popular town pub offering good food. Now a Free House, more incremental improvements have continued over the years and under the stewardship of Simon and Sally Davis the pub has thrived with a busy Sunday quiz. There are Thursday acoustic music evenings and regular events throughout the year including the pub’s Spring Fling music festival on the late May Bank Holiday and the children’s duck race on Easter Monday. The pub is open all day with food available from noon until mid-evening.

Hertford East railway station is an 8 minute riverside walk away with trains to Ware, Broxbourne and south to Liverpool Street. Hertford North station is a 15-20 minute walk away with trains south to Cuffley and Moorgate.
