Trip to Mad Squirrel brewery – Saturday 30th March 2019

Written by Ian Boyd

Our Branch have been offered the wonderful opportunity to visit Mad Squirrel Brewery and Taproom on Saturday 30th March 2019 for an extensive tour of the brewing facility and to sample some of the tasty and innovative brews produced in their state-of-the-art American made plant, which includes 3 brand new triple brew 9000L fermenting vessels.

Mad Squirrel started brewing in 2004 in Hertford under the name of Red Squirrel before moving to the west of Hemel Hempstead in 2011. Following hugely successful crowdfunding and re-branding to Mad Squirrel now produces a wide spectrum of beers, from pale ales through fruit and sours to stouts and their widely applauded “Nut” range.

Their London Porter won Hertfordshire Beer of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and last year Hopfest won Silver. Several cask beers will be on offer, which may include the new “Red Ale” if ready and there will also be an opportunity to sample other beers in different formats for comparison, should people wish, as well as artisan wine, craft gin and take-away merchandise.

All these beers are not only available at the Brewery but also any of the 5 additional taproom venues across Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, with possibly more in the pipeline.

During the visit, all members will be offered 50% off the regular menu prices for those wishing to taste some of the excellent food available.

After the brewery visit, we intend to stop off at Hemel Hempstead’s exciting new micro pub – The Monks Inn (10 Real Ales) before heading back to St Albans for a final break and thence to the usual pick-up points.

Coach pick-ups (i.e. bus leaving time) and schedule:

10.30am – Hertford Regional College “Create & Enterprise Campus” (if required)
10.40am – Hertford East Railway Station
11.00am – Hatfield Railway Station (if required)
11.20am – St Albans City Railway Station
12.00pm – Arrive at brewery

4.00pm – Leave Monk’s Inn and return to St Albans for more pubs
6.30pm – Leave St Albans for drop-offs in Hatfield (if required), Hertford and Ware (if required).

The cost will be £20 per CAMRA member, payable on the day. Non-members on their first trip are also welcome at the same price. Non-members who have been on one of our trips before may also join us for the price of £25, space allowing. This is likely to be a popular trip, so please book early, preferably by email, to avoid disappointment.
