Our June Branch Meeting is to be held on Tuesday 18 June, at the North Mymms Social Club which is in Station Road, Welham Green – at 8pm. This is the first time we have held a meeting in Welham Green – I hope it will attract a good attendance.
Our speaker at the event is Jack Adams with the subject “Changing Cultures of the Public House”. He is a member of the club and an historian who specialises in cross-cultural studies and the effect of mythologies on the human psyche. He collects antique books from which he draws references for his work and talks. Jack has spoken at conferences, meetings and institutions around the World, holds an M.A. in Public Memory and History. He is a Churchill Fellow.
His talk will present an overview of how cultural change effects the public house as a social venue with reference to local histories. As we are still witnessing a loss of public houses, to what extent is this about cultural change and what exactly is the nature of that change? A simple question on the face of it but, as we will see, studies of culture can be far more tricky than obvious. In his talk we will also consider some historical texts describing previous cultural changes which effected the role of the public house.
North Mymms Social Club is a friendly, air-conditioned, community social club offering two real ales. Card-carrying CAMRA members are always welcome but must sign in, or be signed in, as a guest. Please knock on the door and wait for admittance. There are two first floor full-size snooker tables and pool and darts are also popular. There is a monthly Saturday quiz night and various events during the year. Filled rolls are sometimes available. The club is open lunchtimes and evenings and all day Friday – Sunday.
Welham Green railway station is a 4 minute walk away with trains north to Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City and beyond and south to Brookmans Park, Potters Bar and on to Moorgate. Alas, local bus services do not stretch into the evenings.
