Real ale dates for your diary

Written by Ben Wilkinson

A couple of social gatherings coming up soon for your diary. As always, everyone is welcome and new faces are always great to see!

Club of the Year celebration

Friday 7th June, 8pm

Join us as we celebrate our Branch Club of the Year, and hand over the coveted certificate to the Royston Social Club in St Albans. This excellent club boasts an ever-rotating range of up to four cask beers and, under the stewardship of Barrie Lloyd, has earned its place as a real ale destination.

We’ll be meeting up at 8pm to enjoy a pint or two while our chairman makes the presentation. And afterwards, from 9pm, there will be a quiz night taking place – so, if you feel like making an evening of it, why not form a team and stick around for that!

You don’t need to be a member of the club, CAMRA members are always warmly welcomed – simply ring the doorbell for access. Situated in College Road, the club is a 15-20 minute walk from St Albans City Station. If travelling from Hertford, Hatfield or Welwyn Garden City, it is close to the 724 bus route – we recommend getting off at the Morrisons supermarket and walking from there.

Hitchin pub trail and beer festival social

Saturday 8th June, 1.45pm

We would love you to come along as we explore the pubs of Hitchin, winding our way through the historic town towards finishing up at the excellent Hitchin Beer Festival.

We’ll be meeting at the Albert (close to the station) at 1.45pm before setting off to check out some of the real ale pubs in and around the town centre with a brief stop in each. If there are enough of us, we may split into two groups, meeting up at different points.

The plan is then to finish up at Hitchin Beer Festival, which is taking place at the town’s rugby club, and promises more than 100 cask ales, plus craft keg and international beers, real cider and perry, and even a selection of mead.

If travelling from St Albans, there is a 304 bus to Hitchin leaving St Peter’s Street at 12.40. If travelling from Hertford, Hatfield or Potters Bar, your best bet could be to travel to Hitchin by train. In terms of getting home again, there may be options to share taxis.
