The Hertford Ale Trail 2024 – Saturday 30th November

Written by Les Middlewood

This year’s Hertford Ale Trail will once again visit some of Hertford’s best real ale outlets – an afternoon beer festival on the move. Expect around 30 beers, light and dark, from national and local breweries. Our itinerary:

1.00pm – Black Horse, West Street (Free House)
1.45pm – White Horse, Castle Street (Admiral Tavern)
2.30pm – Quiet Man, Fore Street (Free House)
3.15pm – Six Templars, The Wash (Wetherspoon)
4.00pm – Old Barge, The Folly (Free House)
4.45pm – Hertford Club, Bull Plain (Free House)
5.30pm – Woolpack, Mill Bridge (McMullen)
6.15pm – Old Cross Tavern, St. Andrew Street (Free House)

Other real ale outlets in Hertford include the Blackbirds in Parliament Square (Stonegate Pubs); the Hertford Bell in Railway Street (Greene King); the Lord Haig, South St, the Salisbury Arms Hotel, Fore Street and the White Hart, Salisbury Square (all McMullen’s). A little further afield are the Great Eastern Tavern in Railway Place and the Millstream in Port Vale (both McMullen’s); the White Lion (Star Pubs) and the Greyhound (McMullen’s) both in Bengeo Street via Port Hill and the Golden Griffin (McMullen’s), Windsor Drive.

Some of our eight selected pubs will also be offering traditional real cider.

Saturday is market day in Hertford. If you are in town before our start why not pop into Hertford Museum in Bull Plain – on the 1st floor there are display cases with artefacts from Hertford’s former breweries and pubs. Or visit the Tourist Office Information Centre at 10-12 The Wash to find out more about the town.

Public Transport – Hertford is served from St.Albans, Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City by the 724 cross-Hertfordshire bus service – also by the 310 Lea Valley bus service and the 907 Stevenage to Cheshunt route. Hertford North railway station hosts trains south from Stevenage and north from London Moorgate and Finsbury Park. Hertford East railway station receives trains direct from London Liverpool Street and Cheshunt – from Bishop’s Stortford change at Broxbourne.

Local Hertford branch members will be on hand to help with directions.

All Welcome! We look forward to seeing you.
