Top Brew in Hertfordshire Presentation

Written by Les Middlewood

Thursday 21 November 2024, 8pm at the Red Lion, Hatfield

Congratulations to McMullen’s who have scooped CAMRA’s 2024 Hertfordshire Beer of the Year award with their historic AK Original Mild. The beer came first in a blind tasting held at September’s St Albans Beer and Cider Festival, competing against beers from all of the countyโ€™s cask beer brewers.

The presentation is to be held from 8pm on Thursday 21 November at the Red Lion, Great North Road in Hatfield, just 250yds north of Hatfield Railway and Bus Station. All CAMRA members in Hertfordshire are welcome.

McMullen’s trace AK back to the 1830s, making it one of Britain’s oldest brews. It was a stalwart and welcome cask ale in Hertfordshire when CAMRA was formed in the 1970s all with the aim of defeating the depressing national march towards insipid and tasteless keg beers. AK can be found in the majority of the company’s pubs in Hertfordshire โ€“ a quaffing traditional session pint formed from Whitbread Goldings hops and pale, crystal and chocolate malts.

The award to McMullen’s demonstrates that AK, a beer first brewed in the 19th century, can still impress the beer judges and beer drinkers of today. “AKnowledged” as Hertfordshire Beer of the Year for 2024.

Come along to enjoy a pint and join in the celebration.
