December socials with your local branch

Written by Ben Wilkinson

The month of festivity has arrived, and – if planning for Christmas isn’t enough – we’ve got a packed programme of social events to keep you busy throughout December!

Everyone is invited to any or all of these events and new faces always get a warm welcome. So why not join us, and even bring along friends or family if you like!

Friday 6th December: Branch trip to Pig’s Ear Beer Festival – 6pm at St Albans City Station or 7pm at the festival venue

London’s legendary Pig’s Ear Beer Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Come and join a group of us from South Herts as we head into the capital to enjoy the festival’s Friday evening session. The event boasts a choice of more than 200 cask ales, ciders and keykeg beers and is renowned for having a particularly good selection of dark beers plus extra special one off casks from a great range of breweries.

If you’re coming from St Albans, meet us outside the Platform 4 entrance of St Albans City Station at 6pm and travel into London with us. Or otherwise, meet us at the festival venue itself from around 7pm.

Friday 13th December: Christmas social featuring Festival Music Bingo – 8pm at Royston Social Club, College Road, St Albans

If you came along to this year’s St Albans Beer & Cider Festival and enjoyed the Wednesday night Music Bingo, then we have some great news! Our hosts are back on the decks for a December special!

Join us for what promises to be a fun and festive gathering on Friday 13th December, where you can not only catch up with friends and enjoy a pre-Christmas pint or few – but you can also test your music knowledge across the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, and join in with some rounds of Play Your Cards Right.

The Royston Club is an excellent venue with a great range of beer, and you don’t need to be a club member to come along – just ring the buzzer. Hope to see you there!

Friday 27th December: The annual Sopwell Sweep – 2pm at The Beehive, Keyfield Terrace, St Albans

By the 27th, you’ll have had enough of leftovers, Quality Street, and quite possibly your family too – so why not escape and join us for a few beers or ciders around the fantastic pubs of St Albans’ Sopwell district! Our annual post-Christmas crawl is back again for 2024 and this one is always a great occasion.

We’ll be meeting up at the Beehive at 2pm before embarking on a trail of a number of excellent real ale establishments. So don your best Christmas jumper (or don’t) and join us…

Save the date: London social on Saturday 11th January

We’re working on plans for a social trip around some excellent London pubs on Saturday 11th January. More details to follow, but please keep the date free if you would like to come along.

A couple of other things

We’d love to see you at any or all of the above – we’re a sociable and friendly bunch and you’ll always be made to feel welcome. If you have any questions or want to check any details, just drop me an email.

We also have our December Branch Meeting on Wednesday 4th December, to which all members are invited This will be an opportunity to catch up on the more serious side of our campaigning work. It takes place from 8pm at the Royston Social Club, College Road, St Albans.

Finally, if you’re struggling for Christmas present ideas, why not consider a CAMRA gift membership! For more details, see https://camra.org.uk/membership/gift-membership.
