South Herts Pubs & Club of the Year 2018

Written by Les Middlewood

Congratulations to all our Branch winners in this year’s Pub, Cider Pub and Club of the Year competitions.

Pub of the Year 2018

Gold Winner is the Old Cross Tavern in central Hertford. The previously 4 times winner of the competition continues to excel as a community pub offering a superb range of beers including one from its own micro-brewery on site. The pub’s slogan of “Pubs The Way They Used To Be” perfectly describes the atmosphere where conversation and discussion are to the fore. The presentation of the Pub of the Year Shield will take place on Tuesday 8 May at 9pm.

Silver goes to last year’s winner, the Mermaid in St Albans. The pub continues to set the mark for community pubs in St Albans. In the city centre, the pub offers a great range of beers together with an extensive selection of ciders and perries. Presentation of the award will take place at the pub’s annual Cider Festival which will be held in the pub’s back garden on Saturday, 26 May at 5pm.

Bronze has been won by the Black Horse, Hertford. Winner of the Silver award in 2104 and 2015, the pub offers 6 or more real ales plus cider and continues to shine as a lively community pub with a superb food offering including game, a lovely garden with children’s area and a hands-on interest in sport typified by the pub’s own rugby union team. The presentation will be during the Hertford Mild Night on Tuesday 15 May at 8.15pm.

Cider Pub of the Year 2018

Our award once again goes to the Mermaid in St Albans with its peerless selection of real ciders and perries. Try the 6 x thirds palate of ciders and perries to help you gain a full taste of the range of ciders and perries that Britain’s makers can offer. The presentation will take place at the pub’s annual Cider Festival on Saturday, 26 May at 5pm.

News from all of the above presentations will appear on this website in due course.

Club of the Year 2018

Our winner is the Hertford Club based at the historic Lombard House in the centre of Hertford. Picking up the award for the 4th consecutive year, the riverside patio and walled garden offer a peaceful retreat. Three real ales and real cider welcome club members and visitors. CAMRA members may be signed in on production of CAMRA membership cards. The presentation took place in April at the Club’s excellent monthly quiz – see separate report.
