It Couldn’t Happen to my Hertford Local, Could It?

Written by Les Middlewood

Fifteen years ago Pints of View printed an article about the pubs that have been lost in Hertford since 1950.

It conjured much misty-eyed discussion in the town pubs as it demonstrated that over 30 pubs had closed.

Whilst closures had not always been for economical reasons (Hertford’s road improvements claimed a few by itself), the loss in numbers had also coincided with the dwindling number of people using their Community Pubs or Locals. We suggested that maybe this was acceptable so long as there was another pub just up the road but what happens when that one closes?

Since that article the pub has continued to have to compete with the rise of other pastimes and activities and now we have the unknown long-term effects that will be caused by Covid-19.

The pub still holds a place dear to most drinkers` hearts and more than ever we need to give it our support.

Look out for our positive 2020 Autumn Ale Trail of Hertford’s current real ale pubs, soon to be printed on this website.

The updated list below is a tale of what has happened to the town’s pubs – maybe cause itself for friendly nostalgia, over a pint, in a Hertford pub.
