Hertfordshire Champion Beer of the Year 2023

Written by Will Lewis

Each year at the St. Albans Beer & Cider Festival a competition takes place to select the Champion Beer of Hertfordshire.

Each brewery located in Hertfordshire is invited to put forward one beer of whatever style they choose, and this is presented to the judging panel in a ‘blind’ tasting (they don’t know what beers they are tasting until afterwards). The panel is made up of members from the Hertfordshire CAMRA branches including renowned beer experts, trained tasters and those with a lifetime of practical experience!

The winner in 2023 was Damascene 2023, 6.3%, created by the Crossover Blendery, based between Baldock and Stevenage.

It is a blend of 1, 2 and 3 year old golden ales. Spontaneously fermented and aged in neutral French oak barrels. Refermented on Damascene damson grown in Worcestershire. On 9th December a group of CAMRA members from several Hertfordshire Branches visited to Blendery to present the award to the Founders, Charlie Wood (in the picture with Ian Boyd, Chairman of the South Herts Branch) and George Stagg. They were delighted to accept the award and for the recognition of their outstanding and unusual beers.
